How To Draw Pixel Art On Paper
Read Time: 8 mins Languages:
Pixel illustrations are groovy for making computer icons, isometric images and even whole scenes. They tin exist fabricated quickly and easily using Photoshop with a couple of quick tweaks to the preference settings.
The only drawback though, is that the pixel fine art looks best when each pixel has been placed past mitt as opposed to using some Photoshop filter. That's right, placed by paw — I know this sounds a little crazy especially when some pixel scenes accept thousands of pixels in them. But without the hand placement your pixel art tin can wait like a bad Lo Res epitome, so beware!
I think a skillful dominion of thumb earlier starting off is that you should be able to see your creation clearly equally a grouping of dissimilar colored squared bricks, but so if you squint and blur your optics you can brand it out equally an paradigm. Imagine that you lot're making a tile mosaic, only you don't need whatever grout.
Beneath is a consummate piece of pixel artwork, we'll be creating some of the more basic pieces in this work.
Software
OK let's set up up for cartoon. Just in case y'all don't have a copy of Photoshop, in that location are some costless defended Pixel drawing programs available for free download:
- Pixen (Mac)
- Graphics Gale (Win)
- Observe more apps here.
I've had a play effectually with both programs, but came back to Photoshop because I'thou used to the keyboard commands.
Okay, Let's Set Up a Folio
- Kickoff open the preferences in Photoshop and set the Paradigm interpolation to "Nearest Neighbour."
- Create a new Folio 300 px by 300 px at 72 dpi.
- Select the Pencil tool at ane pixel. The Pencil and Eraser tools are the only tools you will really demand.
- Occasionally you lot might use the magic wand to select an area to make full, simply make sure Anti Alias is off.
If you did use the brush tool at a whopping nine pixels instead of one, you lot'll get anti-aliasing occurring and that volition spoil the hard-border pixel effect. So stick to 1 pixel. "Continue it lean go along it hateful," as my Female parent used to say.
When your pixel cartoon is viewed at 100% (actual size) the pencil tool at 1 pixel wide is very pocket-size, and then y'all might notice it hard to come across and manipulate. An idea is to overstate the view to 800% then you tin can encounter what you lot are doing. I often take a 2nd window open in Photoshop with the aforementioned screen view at 200% and then I tin can rapidly run across how my drawing looks upwardly close and also from a little farther away at the same time.
We tin can salvage our working medico as a PSD file and consign for web utilize later as a GIF file. Nosotros can besides enlarge the file after and plow into a TIF for CMYK printing.
Lean & Mean
Let's Get-go Drawing
OK let'due south have a become at drawing something similar this open book. With the Pen tool draw around the edge to create your blackness outline. And then fill up in the flat colors of the page and book mark.
Create the idea of text on the page with some single pixel lines. See how we put a slight kink in the line to requite the impression of a slight bend on the page.
Lastly add together some highlights down the eye of the pages and side of the bookmark. A prissy fiddling touch is a single pixel highlight at the lesser exterior corner of each folio, it just gives a hint of a page border instead of being a solid cake.
Once you've got the nuts of outlines, colors, highlights and shading, y'all tin can try your paw at building other simple shapes.
Angled Pixel Lines
Pixel icons like the ones above can exist designed as a series of lines that are just 90º to each other and are very much squares and rectangles. Occasionally though, you might demand a line at an angle.
Something to behave in mind is angled lines look all-time when they are a regular blueprint. If they are irregular (like those shown below), they can announced lumpy and crude when viewed small. The second example below is much smoother Isometric angles, which look great with pixel drawings, but it'southward non the 30º "iso" angle y'all used in Technical drawing class — it's actually something closer to 26.5º. 30º unfortunately gives a lumpy line at 100%. If y'all brand a line that regularly runs 2 points over and 1 point upward, you'll get 26.5º.
Shall we effort drawing something else that's a footling more than Geometric and uses more of those line patterns?
The irregular line will look lumpy at 100%.
Smooth line patterns at dissimilar angles.
Let'south Draw a Pixel Log
The lines down the length are like shooting fish in a barrel we know how to practise those at present, only how virtually those round ends?
These two are regular patterns but are changing from broad horizontal lines down to squares and and then to vertical lines. It does look a little jagged simply if you blur your optics it does wait correct!
The bend on the height-right of the log end is also the reverse blueprint of the bottom-left section. I frequently count the pixels or call up sure combinations. The pixel philharmonic on the circle is...
- 3 squares (across)
- 2
- 111
- 222(downwards)
- 6
- ii
- ane
A little catchy to get the hang of at kickoff similar using bezier curves in Illustrator but you before long get a "feel" for it. The length of the log is like shooting fish in a barrel: we simply use the two along 1 up system and make the log as long or curt as we want.
Smaller concentric circles on the finish requite a nice ring pattern and some areas of darker shading at the lesser of the log requite it some depth. We'll requite the log a flat fir color to start, then to create depth, we can create dithering by placing pixels of contrasting colour either side of our high light/low light lines.
You can build up the patterns and make them more complex. Conscientious though — the more realistic and catchy y'all endeavour and get the fuzzier the image may announced if it's destined to reproduce at small-scale size.
I did throw in a few more random pixels on log #iii as I wanted it to have a rough look and dissimilarity a little with the squirrel.
For the concluding log I worked in an area of stripped bark and a small co-operative. I establish it best to complete i surface area or style first and so work more detail into information technology. I don't think I could have drawn the stripped bawl log with dithering pattern from scratch — instead, I merely kept adding layers over top of layers. Simple stages work all-time!
Irregular Pixel Drawing
Allow's move onto something a little more irregular, like a Squirrel to sit on our log. For something complicated similar this, it'southward best to get-go out with pencil and paper.
Start I drew an isometric square on my folio to become the right dimensions. Since we're using this particular instance for editorial purposes, I used a photo for reference. Then I beginning to sketch. I pay particular attention to the angle on both ears and feet as I desire them to follow the isometric lines.
As you can see the detail is very minimal — I only desire to go the basic shape and correct angles worked out first. We'll practise the residuum of the work in Photoshop.
Bring in the sketch, put on a new layer and ghost the opacity and so you tin see the pixels y'all are about to create clearly. It's not a hard and fast rule but I discover pixel drawings look all-time when they take black outlines.
Here I am going around my Squirrel with the pencil tool creating the black outline. One thing to be avoided is clumping upward where outline pixels bear upon each other on more than one side. If you draw an actress square just delete it with your eraser tool (also kept at 1 pixel width, see the cherry-red circumvolve ) it will look neater and your audience will thanks for information technology.
It however looks a little messy but information technology volition shape up! Keylines inside the illustration besides help to requite it a bold wait, but brand sure they are a darkish color that isn't black to make some contrast. Telephone call me a radical just I went with brown on this one.
When the shape is complete fill the inner expanse with a dainty mid tone color (soft brown) and mayhap apply a light color to bring out some highlights.
The black outline rule is not a hard and fast one, I did leave some black keylines below the front jaw and paw as it was getting hard to see what was going on.
Conclusion
The mitt placing, removing, changing of pixels is where the skill comes in. Sometimes. But once you showtime to get the hang of information technology, you'll exist able to describe just about anything — all you lot need is some patience. Hope this helps, and inspires you to create great work of your own!
